Rima Berns-McGown is the Member of Provincial Parliament for Beaches-East York. She is a member of the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly, the Official Opposition Critic for Poverty and Homelessness, and a member of Ontario's first Black Caucus.
Before getting elected, she was a professor at the University of Toronto at Mississauga where she taught diaspora studies and served as Research Director of The Mosaic Institute. She holds a PhD from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth, an MA from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of John Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University. Most recently, she also completed the Directors Education Program with the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Rima and her partner David have lived in Beaches–East York for 25 years, where they raised their four kids. You can sometimes catch them walking their dogs Elliot and Kuma along the boardwalk. She advocates for systemic change that creates meaningful inclusion, accountable institutions and the elimination of all systemic oppression.
