NDP MPP hosts community meeting for Beaches-East York families worried about Ford’s health-care scheme
TORONTO — Rima Berns-McGown, NDP MPP for Beaches-East York, held a vigorous community conversation Thursday evening for families who are worried about Doug Ford’s health-care legislation.
“Beaches-East York families are angry and concerned about Doug Ford’s cuts to health-care and the government’s scheme to open Ontario’s health-care system to unprecedented privatization without adequate consultation. They are deeply worried about the impacts of public health cuts,” said Berns-McGown.
The packed room heard from East End health care leaders Sarah Downey, president and CEO of Michael Garron Hospital; Matt Kirkham, Executive Director of South East Toronto Family Health Team; and Mireille Cheung, Director of Primary Health Services at the East End Community Health Centre.
The community meeting comes on the heels of a $1-billion cut to Toronto Public Health, which is responsible for containing disease outbreaks, restaurant inspections, immunization programs and more. The meeting also follows news of cuts to ambulance and paramedic services as well as front-line layoffs at the Telemedicine Network.
“We should be investing more in our public health-care system, not letting Doug Ford make cuts and allowing for-profit companies siphon dollars away from front-line care,” said Berns-McGown.
